GSMA Focuses on Mobile Money

The GSM Association is staging a two-day event, the GSMA Mobile Money Summit, in Cairo, Egypt, from 14-15 May 2008. The event is being held in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, The Consultative Group to Assist the Poor, and the Department for International Development.
The event will bring together industry leaders and senior executives from financial services organisations, mobile network operators, development organisations, solutions vendors, and regulatory and policymakers from around the world.
The GSMA notes that the rapid growth of mobile phone use for financial transactions is creating a rare opportunity to expand markets and transform lives. Throughout the world, mobile banking can bring low-cost financial services to millions of people, especially in developing countries where banking services are not readily available. It also has enormous potential to open new markets for organisations that can facilitate it.
The goal of the Mobile Money Summit is to stimulate greater collaboration between all stakeholders – globally, regionally, and locally – and to foster commercial solutions that create opportunities for developing countries and economies.
Day one of the event looks at why mobile money is taking off in 2008, examining in detail how three leading mobile money projects work. The focus for day two is how the adoption of mobile money can be speeded up, looking at how best to engage regulators, ensure financial integrity, avoid money laundering and create effective cross-sector regulation.
There's more information on the event here.
