The Number of NFC-ready Terminals Doubled in 2011

The market for NFC-ready POS terminals doubled in 2011, to an estimated 2.5m units worldwide, according to research from Berg Insight.

Berg forecasts that the global installed base grow at a CAGR of 49.4 per cent to 43.4m units in 2017, corresponding to an increase in penetration from 8 per cent in 2011 to 53 per cent in 2017. That number will be highest in North America, at an estimated 86 percent.

“Mobile wallet services will create an unprecedented opportunity for retailers to interact with consumers in real-time while their purchasing decisions are being formed, for instance by delivering personalized offers in real-time while consumers are inside the shop”, says Lars Kurkinen, Berg's telecom analyst.
