eBay is Top Mobile Site for Christmas Shoppers

eBay was the top mobile retail site this December, accounting for 0.7 per cent of all visits to online shops, according to research from Experian.

Although the data only counts shoppers using wi-fi, these visits have increased 135 per cent over the last year, with Argos’ site receiving 0.4 per cent of all visitors and Tesco seeing 0.2 per cent. Groupon made it into a surprising sixth place.

Amazon, which doesn’t have a separate 'm.' site so specific mobile visits cannot be determined, was the most visited retail website overall, seeing 10.9 per cent of retail visitors, up 2.3 per cent on last year. Five of the top 10 fastest growing retail sites were the dedicated mobile versions. Argos’ mobile site saw the second largest growth after Amazon, of 0.3 per cent on last year. eBay on mobile grew by 0.3 per cent, putting it in fourth place.

“As tablets were the most popular gift under the tree this Christmas, we’re expecting mobile retail to grow even more in 2013 as consumers start to shift their internet usage from desktops and laptops to tablets and smartphones," said James Murray, digital insight manager at Experian Marketing Services. “Now more than ever retailers are going to have to optimise their web and email content for the growing number of mobile devices on the market."
