Boingo Offers Free Wi-Fi Sponsored by Google Play

Wi-fi software and service provider Boingo Wireless has announced that it will offer free wi-fi at over 4000 hotspots around the US, including 15 major airports, through the end of September.

The wi-fi is being sponsored by Google Play as part of Boingo’s Cloud Nine Media platform, which uses the wi-fi hotspots as an ad network to reach mobile audiences. The wi-fi will be available for use with Android phones and tablets (iPhone and iPad did not make the list), as well as both Windows and Macintosh laptops. Consumers who use the free wi-fi will get free access to Google Play content and be able to browse music, books and other media.

“Google Play is the first to take part in our newly expanded wi-fi sponsorship network, which reaches millions of consumers each month with place-based brand engagements,” said Dawn Callahan, VP of consumer marketing for Boingo. “Sponsorships like this give users the free wi-fi they crave, advertisers the consumer interaction they need, and venues the revenue to offset the costs associated with providing a high-bandwidth wi-fi experience.”
